66 Bar-registered firms across 9 towns handle this in Malaysia. Wills, probate and estate administration cover drafting a will, obtaining a grant of probate (where there is a will) or letters of administration (where there is not), and distributing the estate. For Muslims, faraid and the Syariah court may apply. Firms below across Malaysia handle these matters.
Probate is granted when the deceased left a valid will naming an executor. Letters of administration are needed when there is no will — the court appoints an administrator, and distribution follows the Distribution Act 1958 (or faraid for Muslims).
An uncontested grant typically takes four to eight months. Estates with foreign assets, disputes, or missing beneficiaries take longer.
A will does not have to be drafted by a lawyer, but a solicitor ensures it is validly executed and hard to challenge. Any firm below can prepare one.
